How does the high-tech key work? The key contains a tiny embedded electronic chip called a transponder. Each transponder has its own unique code--it's the key's 'fingerprint'. When the key is inserted into the ignition and turned, the transponder is energized and broadcasts its unique code to the car's receiver in the dashboard. If the car's receiver recognizes the code, it will allow the car to start.

Key Cutting/Programming: Programming instructions are not included. This device requires cutting and programming by a dealership or locksmith. The procedure takes only a few seconds to complete and many dealerships will do it for free as a courtesy. If your dealer does charge a fee, local locksmiths usually charge much less to remain competitive.

Be smart and program yourself a key before you lose one or both. You need two originals to program your own. If you are down to one it should cost about $100 to program another. If you are down to none, you did not have forethought. I was down to one original key before I researched the transponder keys. I went to a local locksmith and he programmed me a second master key for $100. I then ordered this uncut transponder key from amazon. I had to make a few calls to find someone willing to cut the key. A couple locksmiths told me they would not do it. Large hardware stores such as Home Depot most definitely won't do it. Once I found a local locksmith who said they would do it I took it straight down and they cut my key for $4. I took it to my car and programmed it myself in the parking lot. It took me about a minute. I was surprised that it was so easy. Save yourself some money and program extras before you lose one!
